Five minutes, one screen at a time. No typing tricks, no jargon. This sheet is for phones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and the Windows app (the Minecraft that is just called Minecraft).
First: what are you playing on?

Be on the house Wi-Fi
Emerald only opens its Bedrock door to people inside the house. Make sure your device is on the home Wi-Fi, not your phone's cellular data. If Ethan lent you a little Wi-Fi box called a Topaz, join the Wi-Fi named Topaz instead; that counts as being in the house.

Text Ethan your gamertag
Your gamertag is the name in the top corner of the Minecraft home screen. Send it to Ethan exactly as it is spelled. He puts it on the guest list. Until he does, the door will say you are not on the list. That is normal.

Open Minecraft and press Play
Then look at the tabs across the top: Worlds, Friends, Servers. Press Servers.

Scroll down to Add Server
It is below the big colourful servers, usually at the very bottom of the list. Press it.

Fill in the three boxes
Server Name: anything you like, for example Emerald
Server Address:192.168.50.169
Port:19132 (it may already say this; leave it)
Then press Save, or Play if that is the only button.

Press your new server, then Join Server
The first time can take ten or twenty seconds. You will arrive in the Valley of the Ancients. Welcome.
Xbox and PlayStation: you must be signed in to your Microsoft account inside Minecraft, the same one that owns your gamertag. If the game asks you to sign in, do that first, then come back to step 3.

Open Minecraft and press Play
Then press the Servers tab across the top.

Press The Hive
Yes, really. The Switch cannot type an address, so the house plays a trick: inside these walls, The Hive leads to Ethan's own server list instead.

Choose Emerald - Valley of the Ancients
A short list appears with Emerald on it. Press it, then Join. The first time can take ten or twenty seconds.
If The Hive opens the real Hive (lots of minigames, thousands of players), your Switch is not on the house Wi-Fi or the Topaz. Go back to step 1.
If something goes wrong
"You are not whitelisted on this server."Your gamertag is not on the guest list yet, or it was spelled differently. Text Ethan the name exactly as the game shows it.
"Unable to connect to world."Nine times out of ten: the device is on cellular data or a neighbour's Wi-Fi. Check step 1. The tenth time, the server is asleep; text Ethan.
I cannot find Add Server.Keep scrolling down on the Servers tab. It hides under the big featured servers. On Switch there is no Add Server at all; use The Hive trick above.
It asks me to sign in to Microsoft.Do it. Consoles and phones need a Microsoft account to play with others. Use the one that owns your gamertag.
Do I need to buy anything?No. Just the Minecraft you already own.
